Despite the ongoing challenges of a strong Australian dollar and more Australians travelling overseas, the latest figures show Victoria’s tourism industry continues to perform positively from both a national and international perspective.
For the year ending December 2011, Melbourne recorded its highest number of international overnight visitors and expenditure, with strong growth also occurring in regional Victoria, including an impressive 17 per cent increase in expenditure compared to 2010.
On the national front, domestic overnight visitors to Victoria increased by 7.2 per cent to reach 16.9 million, which outperformed the national average increase of 3.5 per cent. In addition, regional Victoria experienced strong growth in overnight expenditure, increasing by 6.5 per cent to $4.2 billion.
